The Fitness Challenge - The Story Behind the Game
In
1998, Vicki Sorensen was anxiously preparing for her upcoming
wedding when she decided that she and her fiancé should
try to slim down and tone up before their big day. Being wannabe
exercisers - you know, the person (in nearly all of us)
who lacks the motivation to maintain a regular work-out program
- Vicki knew that she and her fiancé, Scott, would need
some help achieving their goal. So she devised a friendly competition-a
game-that consisted of a point system and rewards to motivate
them to exercise at least three days a week for eight weeks. The
game worked! On their wedding day, Vicki was down to a size six
and Scott had lost 20 pounds.
After the birth of her two children, Vicki again turned to her
game to lose the 60 pounds she had gained during her pregnancies.
This time she played the game with her mom, Stephanie. Stephanie
had broken her leg and had spent five months on crutches. She
was desperate to get back in shape. And she did with Vicki's game.
Seeing such positive results in their own lives, Vicki and Stephanie
decided to share their game with friends and neighbors. The results
were staggering. It seemed that everyone who played the game not
only got involved in some form of regular exercise, but they had
loads of fun doing it, too! One neighbor exclaimed that her husband,
who never used to work out, now packed his running shoes to take
on business trips.
Alarmed
with statistics concerning the nation's obesity problem, Vicki
was convinced her invention could help combat this growing epidemic
by giving people a fun way to start and stick with an exercise
program. Forming a mother - daughter partnership, Vicki and Stephanie
decided to take action. Although they both held professional positions
in sales and marketing for large corporations, they had no previous
experience in the game industry. So they set out to find the best
talent they could to turn their idea into a reality. Naming their
game The Fitness Challenge, they spent countless hours working
together and with their team and oversaw every aspect of the game's
production. Their relentless pursuit paid off. As the first box
rolled off the assembly line, the duo knew they had a product
that could benefit wannabe
exercisers everywhere.
Today, The Fitness Challenge, available at www.fitnesschallenge.com,
is the only game of its kind on the market-a reality board game
that is played out in real life and that motivates, encourages
and inspires people of all ages and fitness levels to have fun
maintaining a regular exercise program.
One dollar from the sale of every game goes into the Fitness
Challenge Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization whose mission
is to support charities and community organizations that promote
health and wellness, medical research, and family and children's
issues.
